      <image:title>Masonic Education Blog - Grand Master’s Musings: May 2024 - Continue the Work</image:title>
<image:caption>This is not my final Musings to you. However, this is the last in my ongoing series about books. I have written about the various books which have influenced me over the years; particularly, as I see their relationship to Freemasonry. As I am sure you are aware, I have covered most of the fundamental topics taught to an Entered Apprentice from Brotherly Love, to the Chisel, to Temperance, and Fortitude. I have included books from a variety of authors, covering a wide range of subjects including books on financial ideals, to books written with psychology in mind as it relates to self-improvement. However, all of the books are related to personal growth and improvement of self. Following the last three Musings, for those who have been keeping track of my path, the next topic is the virtue of Justice. True Justice is the act of being fair, impartial, or to be just! We state that our meetings are Just, that they are Perfect and that they are Regular. What we are stating is that our meetings are fair and impartial, that every brother is taught to live and act Justly, and uprightly, before God and man.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Masonic Education Blog - Grand Master’s Musings: April 2024 - Continue the Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Greetings Brethren, In my last Musing I dwelt on the idea of the duality of Temperance - the need to move forward with restraint, and how that fosters growth. This draws to mind the two columns of the Saints’ John. Saint John the Baptist is celebrated on June 24th and Saint John the Evangelist is celebrated on the 27th of December. We see various installations occurring near one or the other. In this sense we will see some lodges beginning their Masonic Year, while others will be at the midway point of their yearly cycle. These types of opposing cycles are important to the fortitude of an organization. Keeping the parts moving at different tempos can ensure that the natural tendency of the ebbs and flows of momentum are offset from one another, thus avoiding great swells of unsustainable growth and equally great depressions of inactivity. In the typical cyclical pattern, we will see our own Jurisdiction grow in a small and sustainable manner as we begin to look at welcoming a new Grand Line for our Jurisdiction and new members for our Board of General Purposes. The continual renewal of membership in our governance body ensures the continued prosperity of our organization as new members bring with them vitality, new ideas, and renewed vigor; while our experienced members offer wisdom, guidance, and education. If you are considering serving your lodge, District, the Board of General Purpose, or the jurisdiction, I do recommend you put your name forward. Freemasonry can and will always benefit from the help of those willing to serve.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Masonic Education Blog - Grand Master’s Musings: March 2024 - Continue the Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Greetings Brethren, I can hardly believe it is March. There are many great events which happen in the month of March each year, from Naw-Ruz celebrating the Baha’i New Year; Hola Mohalla - a Sikh Festival; Purim commemorating the salvation of the Jewish people in ancient Persia; Holi - a Hindu festival celebrating the arrival of spring; the Islamic New Year; Lailat al-Miraj celebrating the beginning of the new Lunar New Year; the Night Journey and Ascension of the Prophet Muhammad; and St. Patrick's Day- the celebration of the patron saint of Ireland. Some of these special days direct their particular followers to an observation of moderation, or abstinence, while some of these celebrations can lead to overindulgence. If we were to consider these two aspects as halves of the same whole, we can observe the ideals of temperance. The Spring Equinox will occur on March 20th in 2024. It is an auspicious occasion which showcases the equality and balance which must be observed from time to time. For that brief 24-hour period, day and night will be in balance. This rare moment of the Night tempering the Day, while the Day is equally Tempering the Night, is as good as any to discuss that Masonic Virtue of Temperance.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Masonic Education Blog - Grand Master’s Musings: February 2024 - Continue the Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Greetings Brethren, I would like to begin by thanking all the lodges who have hosted either me or any other member of the Grand Line during our visitations. It has been an absolute pleasure to make my way around the province this year and to acquaint myself with the Brethren I have met in previous travels, or to meet new Brethren for the first time during these travels. If I have not yet been able to make it out to a meeting of your lodge this year, please send an invitation via the Grand Secretary and I would be happy to plan a visit. Over the last few months, I have been recommending various books which I believe can assist a Mason as they try to work on their own personal Ashlars. The idea of improvement of oneself is fundamental to the work of a Freemason. However, along these journeys of self- improvement, one can often rush into a situation headstrong and unprepared for the realities of what comes next. The best way for someone to ensure that they do not fall victim to this eager and enthusiastic self-sabotage is the virtue of Prudence.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Greetings Brethren, I hope that last month was a joyous one filled with happiness and cheer. The Holiday Season, although not over for everyone, is also a season wherein one might find things to have started to become depressing or perhaps a bit of a struggle. Often the month of January, named after Janus, the two-faced Roman deity of new beginnings, can be one of mixed emotions. As the deep dark of winter begins to set in, some people experience feelings of gloom, isolation, and possible depression. Much like the ancient Roman deity of Janus, who focused on the future and the past, people often focus on past errors, as well as their worries of the future; forgetting to focus on the joys of today. Hopefully, the Masons of our jurisdiction can help to provide some relief to one-and-other in this time of “New Beginnings”, as we head into the New Year. Much like the Roman Deity, let us look into our own minds, as well as outwardly, to those around us when we practice the art of providing relief.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Masonic Education Blog - Grand Master’s Musings: December 2023 - Continue the Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Greetings Brethren, December is upon us. The great festive month celebrating many joyous holiday seasons. I know that there are similar beliefs in the other great religions of the world, and I must admit my ignorance to quote them properly. To that end, I would invite the Brethren to enlighten me when we next see each other. However, for me, at this time of year my thoughts turn to Christmas. In the Holy Bible, John 13:34 Jesus says, “A new command I give unto you: That ye Love one another. As I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” This is most easily the clear and comprehensive description of Brotherly Love. Other than being a Founding Principle of Freemasonry, it is also the basis for the “Golden Rule” which is referenced in the Charge to the Newly Admitted Mason in the Entered Apprentice Degree. When a new Entered Apprentice is charged with his Duties to his Neighbour, he is told: “... to your neighbour, by acting with him on the Square, by rendering him every kind office which justice and mercy may require, by relieving his distresses, by soothing his afflictions, and by doing to him, as in similar cases, you would wish he should do unto you...”.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Greetings Brethren, This one will be out of order, but I figured why not release it out of order. It fits the mold of the topic of this discussion. I had planned to discuss Brotherly Love and Relief before I discussed “Truth”, one of our fundamental tenets and principles. However, as the boxing legend Mike Tyson is quoted as saying, “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth.” The book I would like to highlight for your contemplation for those moments in life when your plans go off course due to being proverbially punched in the mouth is Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink. Jocko Willink is a retired Navy Seal who has written a book detailing some of the leadership skills he developed during his experiences leading his team into combat missions in Afghanistan. In his book the author writes about what he calls “extreme ownership” wherein leaders must take full responsibility for their actions (or inactions) and he further describes his beliefs on establishing effective outcomes with teamwork and discipline.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Masonic Education Blog - Grand Master’s Musings: October 2023 - Continue the Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Greetings Brethren, Having already discussed the proper allotment of time to the aspects of our life, and the need for and importance of action in earlier Musings, I must now dwell upon the benefit of repetition. My first recommendation for a book where you can direct your attention for deeper thoughts on the benefits of repetitious behaviour is, once more, James Clear’s Atomic Habits. The idea is not lost on me that the book I look to, when I think of perseverance and repetition, is the same book I think of when I think of action. However, as I wish to provide different books for your consideration with each Musing, I will focus on The Compound Effect by Darren Hardy. Similar to Atomic Habits, Darren Hardy’s The Compound Effect focuses the reader’s attention on consistent, small, yet meaningful actions. The author compares these consistent actions to the interest one can earn in a compounding savings account. However, the author once more uses the time we are allotted in our daily lives as the currency which will yield that compounded effect we are searching for.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Masonic Education Blog - Grand Master’s Musings: September 2023 - Continue the Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Greetings Brethren, September is upon us, and with the fall season we have the return to our lodges for many of the brethren across the province. With the notable exception of those who will no doubt be hard at work with Harvest. In the last two Musings I discussed the need to “Start with Why” and what I believe to be the purpose of Freemasonry. I then discussed the importance of using your time wisely. With each of these previous musings I referenced a book which I have read in the past and which I found to have particular significance in relation to certain Masonic topics. You may notice a theme of books being highlighted in each musing. Following the topics of “Start with Why” and “Properly investing your time”. You may guess the next topic in the series to discuss is the topic of “Labour”. Our work in the first degree discusses that labour is the lot of man. This is of particular importance when we think back to the idea of investing some of our time each day towards personal growth, with the ultimate goal in mind of being able to render ourselves more serviceable to our fellow man.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Masonic Education Blog - Grand Master’s Musings: August 2023 - Continue the Work</image:title>
<image:caption>Greetings Brethren, The summer months are a little bit more relaxed, and the time is used by many lodges to plan for the coming Masonic Year, as well as to rest, relax and recharge. However, once we have gotten some relief, we must continue the work. The first working tool placed in the hands of the workman is the 24-inch gauge. This tool is explained as a symbol to teach us about spending our time wisely. When we properly allot our time with the four cardinal virtues in mind, particularly Prudence, we can accomplish many of our goals and ambitions. The book that I am highlighting this month, should you with to read it or get a summary about it from YouTube or Blinkist, is George S. Clason’s The Richest Man in Babylon. In this book he dispenses wisdom and advice about creating and growing one’s financial stability through a series of short stories. The book begins with a story of a man named Arkad recounting his humble beginnings and his journey from being a poor scribe to becoming the wealthiest man in Babylon. Arkad shared his wisdom with a group of eager listeners, including principles such as saving at least 10% of one’s income, investing in profitable ventures, and seeking advice from knowledgeable individuals. He stresses the importance of financial discipline, proper budgeting, and the power of compound interest. Each with a single sentence, to summarize the story, creating a very easy to follow six-step approach to financial freedom. The first lesson is simply to invest in yourself.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Greetings Brethren, Thank you to MW Bro. Elliott and all of the Brethren who were involved in the 2023 Annual Communication. It was an excellent event, and the new format was enjoyed by everyone with whom I spoke. The slight change to the program allowed for more Brethren to plan their attendance with a bit more flexibility. I congratulate all the Elected and Appointed officers. I look forward to serving the Jurisdiction with each of you throughout the next year. My theme for the year is “Continue the Work.” The Work which is offered by Freemasonry is the ability for one to improve himself and thereby the world around him. The image of the sculptor, who is made of Marble himself, is in my mind as I think about Masonic Work. This being my first Musings, I think it is best to start by referencing Simon Synek’s book: Start with Why. In Start with Why, the author discusses the difference and similarities between organizations which thrive, and organizations which do not. Although I am sure I will not do the story justice, I will try to paraphrase a part of the book. I strongly encourage every brother to read this book, or at least to look it up on Blinkist or YouTube for a synopsis.</image:caption>
